ACN : Day Three

My third day out with ACN was, thankfully, pretty calm. A lot of straw and chow going out alongside fliers and information about the upcoming vaccination clinic. It seems that no matter how often you see these animals, your heart never stops feeling it. I'm lucky because I have a filter that goes between the subject and me. It's when I get home and look over the photos from the day that I'm really impacted. That's exactly why I go out.

In the following (and preceding) photo(s) : High-hanging tires too small for swings are a sign of potential dog fighting.

Packing straw for the day, stuffing dog houses, infected eyes, really small cages, really big chains, mange, emaciation, compassion, fright, aggression and happiness.

A couple more things. Sorry, Chris Cornell (Soundgarden/Audio Slave/Temple Of The Dog), the grass isn't greener where the dogs are shitting. And to those who think it's really cool and bad ass to have an enormous chain and lock around your dog's neck...

You're morons. You're filth. You're scum. Period.

Let's see how you would like to have a padlock and 20lbs worth of chain smash against your body every time you need to use the bathroom, clean up, eat, drink or walk.

Back on the streets next weekend.

After about two hours of disco and costumes, I had run out of wind. I quickly came to the realization that I really need to stick with making photos of things that I really care about. Otherwise I get a whole bunch of snapshots and no photos are really made.

ACN : Day Two

Today after discussing the project with a couple of photographers I realized something very important. Though I do care, very much, about the animals that we come upon, I cannot get involved. I need to remember and stay focused on the fact that I am there to make photos. I'm glad I realized this early on, not four months down the road.

That being said, more dogs were helped today. More straw, chow and affection. The more I go out, the more I want to stay out.

If you're thinking about getting an animal, PLEASE go to a rescue. There are so many animals in need of good homes. Don't support breeders and mills.

ACN : Day One

Yesterday was my first day out with the Michigan Animal Adoption Network/Animal Care Network. The day started rather slow with refreshing some straw, a few bowls of food and boxes of chow to some owners. Vaccination education , clinic information and the progression of the mini mini-van entourage through Pontiac. As the day progressed, each call got worse and worse. Starting out with aggressive dogs that needed a bit of food to completely emaciated animals which hardly had the strength to stand. Lying, aggressive owners and poor animals in dire need of help.

It was an intense first day.

Chicagoland

This weekend I was fortunate enough to be invited to the IPPA Photo Night.

I traversed the lower portion of "The Mitten" on Friday night after work and was welcomed into the Hart residence. After a round of cheese and tomato pizza accompanied by an amazing Spotted Cow, rest was essential if I were to make it through the forthcoming day.

8 am wake-up call to go shoot local Boyscout troops partaking in (somewhat) traditional winter games.

After having a blast with the kids in the snow, Rob and I went back to the house to warm up, eat and transmit. Soon after we were back out shooting some high school basketball. I came to the realization that I'm NOT meant to shoot sports.

After the mad dash back to the Harts' there was a flurry of zucchini-garlic-bread-onion chopping, cheese grating and lemon-zesting. Oh... and stand mixer breaking. Stupid mechanic-hands. But overall, pure culinary synergy with Rob and Christine.

Cale chips, buffalo tofu, moose tracks, risotto, cupcakes... more. Devoured and enjoyed during Photo Night.

Being able to sit and listen to Peter Hoffman, Beth Rooney and Warren Winter while having a cold brew was phenomenal. I learned a lot and it has really inspired me. I realized that in order to make a career out of this "photography thing," I really need to work on the craft and become a better shooter.

Like I said, I'm fortunate. I'm fortunate to have met the people I met, to have seen the images I saw and to experience an environment that harbors development.

Chicago isn't so cold when you know the right people.

Know What You've Got

Got to have some fun, eat some food and make some frames today.

After the day's activities were over and on the way home I was pondering the tragedy that is occurring in Haiti. How lucky we are to know where our family is, know that they're safe and have all the necessities of life. To know that we live lives that are far more than comfortable.

And as for Pat Robertson and Rush Limbaugh... Take those poor excuses for human beings off the airwaves and drag them down the streets of Port Au Prince.

To everyone that is down there, be safe, come home and tell the world the story that it so desperately needs to hear.

Move-In Day

Complete with chili and a disgruntled microwave.

Four hours from start to finish with the move, including three flights of stairs, fifteen minute drive, half hour coffee/sugar cookie break and some food-apprehending.

Phil And Jen's New Home

Though I was slightly sad that I didn't get to make more frames tonight, helping was fun.

Phil and Jen just recently closed on their first house. Lots and lots of work yet to do but they're off to a good start. It's really nice to see family coming together to help. To me it's a lot like food. When you put the time and love into it, it really shows.

[Sidenote] SPEAKING of food... Man... It was so nice to eat such fattening food and not feel guilty. Nothing like a hot bowl of chili with tons of onions, cheese, mustard and a cornbread muffin.

It will be nice to make more photos as the house progresses and really becomes a home.

Michigan Micro - Kuhnhenn Brewing Co.

Today I visited the first brewery, marking the beginning of my Michigan Micro journey.

I went to Kuhnhenn Brewing Co. in Warren, MI. Located on the north-east corner of Chicago and Mound Rd. Right next to the Auto Haus (how appropriate). Bret Kuhnhenn, one of two owners/brothers, took his time to show me around. One of the really cool things about Kuhnhenn is that you can come in and brew your own beer. Pretty amazing if you ask me. Bring in your ingredients, pour it in their vats, sit down and drink their beer while yours does its thing.

I'm eager to learn more about the science of beer and hopefully delve my tastebuds in litres and litres of delicious lager.
